Does the FLARM really send more information out if the com speed is set to
38400 or higher? Please include the reference to that information.

Our solution for FLARM / BT communication is this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/71666155/SoarTronic_Bluetooth_V.1_manual_version_001.pdf

This is using the same BT chip as LUKE does, but on our own PCB. This BT
chip works on 3.3V DC, which is aailable from the FLARM to power external
display. FLARM can power two external displays, and this device consumes
the same as one externl display (LED bsed one), so you can connect this
device and one external display in your FLARM.
You might also need RJ12 or RJ45 splitter. That is included in this device.
When you connect your Bluetooth module and external display in parallel,
you can only read data out from FLARM. Communication towards FLARM is not
possible, because two RJ232 TX (transmit) devices cannot be wired parallel.
You will need a switch, to connect either one at time. We have solved that
problem, and our device allows you to use external display to send requests
to FLARM, and declare tasks or download log files (as long as you do not
attempt to use both devices simultaneously).
