Hi Ronald, I've been using the assistant for quite a few years now, mostly connected to a Flarm connected via rs232 cable to PDA, then IOIO and now BT to my Nexus 4. The Flarm only outputs the barometric or pressure altitude every second and XCSoar derives a lift value from that. There might indeed be a small delay but from my experience it is well below "several seconds" and since the delay is constant you can get used to it pretty quickly.
