I should probably explain why I didn't set up a 2.4 DTD in the "better patch", 
contrary to the previous discussion

I actually implemented and tested that, but then deleted all that cruft from 
the patch.In the process I learned
- that Sun never published a DTD for 2.4, having switched to   schema-based 
validation
- that my attept at writing one is doomed to land nearer to 2.3 than to   2.4, 
making it difficult to document what's happening
- that people are working on XDT-457 and a DTD for 2.4 is a move in a   
different direction
So, please, just turn off the validation until XDT-457 is solved.
