JIRA uses a weird terminology. Here is how I translate it:

JIRA terminology  |  Common terminology
------------------+--------------------
   Bug            |  Bug
   New Feature    |  Feature Request / RFE
   Task           |  Todo
   Improvement    |  Patch / Bugfix

Any other interpretations? We should really decide on this and hammer 
it up on our JIRA's frontpage.

Yes. If you submit a patch (aka Improvement), please link your 
Improvement issue to the related Bug issue with a "depends on" link.
