AFAIK, "ata"/"cmdk" can't access memory >= 4G for dma, so it must use bounce buffers. Could this be a reason why the system is slow with 4G of physical memory installed (where a small amount ~0.5G of physical memory is remapped >= 4G); or with 8G of physical memory installed (where ~4.5G of memory would be >= 4G)? Did you ever try to use the Intel S-ATA controller in AHCI mode? A quick look at the Solaris ahci driver seem to indicate that *some* variants of Intel AHCI S-ATA are able to use 64-bit DMA addresses.
