That is because you have picked up a binary distribution for SUN
Solaris. If you want to build the product yourself, download the
source archive at
http://xml.apache.org/dist/xerces-c/stable/xerces-c-src1_4_0.tar.gz
instead.

NB: use GNU tar when unpacking this, Solaris tar will give you a
checksum error!
