The $XERCESCROOT/src only exists in the source package (xerces-c-src1_6_0.tar.gz ), and such instruction should be for "Building the Xerces-C++ library". If you do not plan to build the library yourself, you can skip that.
If you have downloaded the binary package (xerces-c1_6_0-linux.tar.gz ) and wanna to build the samples, please jump to http://xml.apache.org/xerces-c/build-winunix.html#faq-4, instruction "Building the Samples" directly.
