Are you using SAX or DOM? If you are using SAX, something may be possible. I don't know of any way to do this with a DOM parser. Even with SAX, you would have to estimate the metric yourself, which is possible probably only if you know the "size" of the XML "file" you are parsing. Probably keeping track of how many bytes the SAX parser has requested from the InputSource would be the easiest metric.
