There is no option to configure as a static library at present; this is something we're going to add when we go to a try autotools based build in 3.x. You should be able to hack the Makefiles a bit to emit a static library, however. That is left as an exercise... ;) You could also use the Xcode build, and likewise modify the options in that project to product a library.
