Updating Xerces does seem to have helped; many thanks. (Hey, PROGRESS!)

My kluge to try to validate a subtree in a specific context is _not_ working, unfortunately. Xerces apparently doesn't waste time validating subtrees whose ancestors clearly aren't valid, and the fact that I'm not asserting a required attribute on one of the ancestors seems to be enough to keep the kids from being validated. Oh well; it was a good idea while it lasted, and I'll have to wait for you folks to provide a better way to specify context (or at least suppress this optimization).
