Thanks for your reply. I do get the same error when I specify "iso-8859-1".
What version of Xerces-J are you using?  I assume that I'm doing something
wrong, since

http://xml.apache.org/xerces-j/faq-general.html#faq-8

states that ISO-8859-1 is a supported encoding.
