Now this is where I find out something "spooky" is going on with what I'm doing
(read I'm ignoring some sort of error or something)- although hopefully not. I
did just double check the XML that I'm parsing to make sure it had the
'encoding' attribute set, in case I'm talking out of my hat, and it is.
