True. But Khaled Hosny's solution was perfect:

\uselanguage{british} % or ukenglish or UKenglish, all synonyms

once I realised that "\input Knuth" was neither required
nor productive !
Suggestion for TeX Live installation 2012 :
Ask the user for his or preferred language setting,
and make that the default.
