It's the only way to go. Just do it the same way you would improve your handwriting: pick a few texts and type them up just for practice. Takes a few hours at the most to get the hang of it. If you're using a mac it's also very easy to create your own keyboard layout using ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele).
