\newfontfamily \japanesefont{Ume Mincho}
\def\forjapanese{\japanesefont\makexeCJKinactive}
Appears to be a handy way to temporarily disable a package in order to
get something to work. As I try to get a handle on LaTeX, every one of
these 'hints and kinks' are extremely valuable to me. Thank you very much.
