One concern is, that it will slow down loading for folder with many subfolders, specially on old hardware. If this should upset somebody, we could later introduce a toggle-switch for xfce4-setting-editor later. And we are still discussion if only the hidden ".folder.jpg" / ".folder.png" should supported, or as well the non-hidden ones.
