As of this date, the current release of XFree86 is 4.2.1. The 4.2.1 and
4.2.0 releases both support the exact same hardware, as there were no
driver support changes between releases.

It supports 2D acceleration and Xvideo on all Radeon hardware up to and
including the Radeon 8500. 3D acceleration is supported on all Radeon
hardware up to and including the Radeon 7500.

All newer Radeon hardware, such as the Radeon 9000/9500/9700, and Pro
variants are not supported at all officially however you can coax 2D out
of them with a minor amount of fiddling.

Current developmental (unstable) XFree86 supports almost all of the Radeon
cards in 2D and Xvideo, and 3D on Radeons up to the 8500, and rumors of
the 9000 working as well.
