The pie in the sky goal would of course be to make it work /without/ a configuration file unless the hardware was really strange...] Ok, you have no configuration file. Do you have a sample file you can modify? Have you read http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/XF86Config.5.html ? (should be the same as man 5 XF86Config but one never knows) What hardware do you have?
