I have an old Compaq laptop that I would install X on. It runs Gentoo Linux just fine and has 80Mb of RAM.
Gentoo installed XFree 4.2.1. Unfortunately X always freezes! Here is what I did - I used "xf86cfg -textmode" (it crashes if I don't use -textmode) to configure X. I tried different resolutions, not even 640x480 would work. - The chip/card is exactly listed, so the driver should be ok I assume - type "startx" I get the standard X background (black/white), then I see the mouse arrow, and then the whole laptop freezes and I have to reset it. How can I find out why it freezes and as a result solve this problem? Would I better off with XFree 3.x since the laptop is 6 years old? Thanks for any help, Ingmar. _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
