Regarding: Silicon Motion LynxEM XFree86 4.2.x ``doesn't work''. Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------------ XFree86 Version: 4.2.1
OS: FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE, FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE/STABLE Area: Xserver Server: XFree86 (The XFree86 4.x server) Video Card: pciconv -vl output for the card. From what I understand PCI:1:0:0 actually means AGP. none2@pci1:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0x2550107b chip=0x0710126f rev=0xa3 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Silicon Motion Inc' device = 'SM710 LynxEM' class = display subclass = VGA Description: When starting X with startx (and using a generic XF86Config, generated with xf86config) the screen goes black, then flashes two vertical greeny coloured lines and then goes black again. The machine is then virtually unusable until I remotely ssh in and kill -9 the X server. I think it is something to do with the VESA stuff (see the bottom of the attached output log). This problem occurs with both 4.2.0 and 4.2.1 but _not_ with 4.1(.x?). I have not tested 3.x but I suspect it might work (since everything but Permedia2 cards seemed to work with that ;). I also believe that this might be a FreeBSD-specific problem because I had no problem installing and running RedHat 8.0 (which has XFree86 4.2.0 according to http://www.redhat.com/software/linux/technical/). XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 3 September 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems.
