Here is the problem:

The ATI configuration script doesn't set the BusID correctly for your
card.

To find the correct ID, use lspci. For example, on my machine:

williamg@officebedroom:~> /sbin/lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] System
Controller (rev 11)
[---snip---]
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 If [Radeon 9000]
(rev 01)

This last line is the Radeon card. When you have this number, look in
your XF86Config file (usually /etc/X11/XF86Config), and find the
"Device" section for your card ... something like:

Section "Device"
  BoardName "RV250 If"
  BusID "1:5:0"
  Driver "radeon"
  Identifier "Device0"
  VendorName "ATI"
# Option "NoDDC"
EndSection

And make sure that the BusID line matches the output of lspci - so on
my machine, 01:05.0 -> "1:5:0"

Then it should work. Be warned, though, I found it was not stable
(lockups with OpenGL).
