This sounds similar to the problem I had when I started using Matrox's drivers for XFree86 (big, square inch pointer), and it was solved by specifying in the video card device section:
Option "hw cursor" "off" I'm not sure if that's what's going on here, though, because I don't understand why it would resolve itself by undocking the laptop.
