So, does the 4.3 release go out with the block of code ifdef'd for
just alpha, or for every archicture?  Are there any real-world
bug-reports that lead to this code block being ifdef'd for all
architectures rather than just alpha?  If not, let's re-ifdef it to
alpha and not create bug reports when 4.3 does finally ship, yes?

Or this solution.  Whatever works.  Even if the code is not exactly
correct, is releasing it semi-correct but having it break people's
real-world setups justified?
