Running
        /usr/X11R6_ver_x/bin/X
will start the ver_x server, but applications will be takem from
which ever directory is first in $PATH, and libraries from whichever is
first in /etc/ld.so.conf (or overridden by LD_LIBRARY_PATH).

To switch completely between versions, I change /etc/ld.so.conf (don't
forget to run ldconfig after changing this) and PATH in /root/.bashrc
(~/.bashrc and /etc/profile might be good too).
