Hi, I just purchased an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and am trying to get it to work. Just for reference, it is working fine on my Windows installation, so I know the hardware is ok (I dual boot Linux/Win98). My system specs are at the end of this message.
So far, I can report that I have gotten X to recognize it and start, but I can't seem to get my keyboard to work and log in to really see how it's working. This is my problem. I've edited the termcap file with the information in termcap.???? (forget the extension, but the one that was provided in the 4.2.99.3 release). I can also report that if I just startx after booting to the command prompt, I do get the basic window manager and everything works ok including the keyboard. I should now say I'm using Mandrake 9.0 with the latest kernel .24? (again, can't remember the version cause I'm writing from Windows, but it was just relased a week or so ago) and the latest updates from KDE. Here's is my sequence of events to get to my bug. It's not very long. 1. From Lilo, boot to "Linux", the normal "Graphics & Network" mode. The keyboard is working and I can use the arrow keys to move around and select differnt OS's. 2. The Mandrake Boot window comes up and reports the messages within it's window. Everything reports a status of OK. 3. The screen blanks for a few seconds. This is normal. 4. The Login screen appears. The mouse is working fine and I can use it to select a user, of which I have three configured. 5. I try to enter the password, nothing. At this point I cannot do anything but reboot the system using the mouse. There's one more thing that is confusing me somewhat. When I ran "XFree86 -configure", I get an error that it cannot find libglide22.so. It creates the XF86Config.new file and it seems to work, but apparently, I do not have glide installed. I did a search for anything with "glid" in it too but came up empty. Is this a new requirement with 4.2.99.3? Everything was working fine yesterday with my old card, an ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO and nothing should have been deinstalled, though I did get into a very bad state when I switched cards. Should have realized it wasn't going to work, but tried it anyway. I will continue to investigate this and look around to see if anyone else has experienced this. If you can provide any assistance or direction, it would be appreciated.
