In fact, I wouldn't expect it to die as it's being already used in many places. Also, I don't see the problem here with release dates. This is not commercial software, so no marketing or other tactics apply. Software is released when it's ready, and if takes a lot of time to release a new version, maybe it's due to the fact that people do it cause they want, without earning money, not to keep stakeholders happy. So if you want to help, donate money or better yet, help them with coding so they can release faster. So, are you waiting for any specific feature? Why do you complain then? If you think Open Source Software needs to release software at a fast pace, then you've chosen the wrong side. Go with commercial parties: they will charge you for software, for buggy software and they associated marketing campaigns. In OSS, things work a little different.
