To me it looks like the font itself is broken, or the font renderer
has broken it. I don't have a suggestion for you other than
trying to narrow it down. It would be useful to know which
font it was and which renderer is building the glyphs for it.
You can probably find the renderer by removing the modules
for "type1", "speedo", "freetype", etc... one by one and seeing
if it goes away.
