I'm not the autoritative source, but you should look for DRI. It stands for Direct Rendering Infrastructure, and is integrated in the mainstream XFree86 source. Its aim (in short) is to provide hardware 3D acceleration. You have to have a graphic card that is supported (MGA up to G400 (G450?), ATI Radeon and R128, some i8x0, and a few others). Get either the 4.3.0 or CVS sources, enable DRI in your host.def config file, compile, install, and load it (in your XF86Config-4 file) at runtime.
