For my part, I've been building my distro from scratch, following the LFS book at www.linuxfromscratch.org and beyond.linuxfronscratch.org. They have instructions on how to build XFree, and it's quite straightforward to follow! On the other side, there must be some doc on www.xfree86.org, or wothin the source...
