Client applications, of course. Start X with an xterm connected to it. If I recall, the xinit command starts X and runs an xterm by default, unless it can find proper xinitrc-type files. Inside the xterm, the DISPLAY variable will be properly set, so you should be able to run more programs (you probably want to background them).
