I run Redhat 9. I chose Redhat because I'm a newby and it seemed the
easiest
to understand... I still have a lot to learn about linux... I have
tried
reinstalling fontconfig, freetype, KDE, and several other things, both
from
rpm and from source, and nothing works... I can locate the file
libfontconfig.so.1, which is a symbolic link to libfontconfig.so.1.0,
which
is what was installed when I installed X 4.3.0... Any ideas? Thanks!

Try to run "ldconfig" as root (this will make the system take account of the newly installed libs).
Bye
Manu
