Could you also post (or email) your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file? I'd love to have a look at the modeline for 800x600. I did notice the reporting of (II) TRIDENT(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 45.00 MHz. This seems like a small range to me, and perhaps the modeline has a clock higher than 45 MHz (most of my 800x600 modelines do).
