XConfigurator and xf86config recommended by textbooks would not start.
(Did I see that there is a new command for this in later versions?)
Eventually found the configuration (text) file in X11
Armed combat with 'VI' edited two instances of 16bpp to 8bpp.
Xwindows worked a treat after reboot - nice!
I'm not sure whether this was the correct method but it worked.

Would have replied sooner but e-mail computer going like snail after
virus checker update so I'm building another/faster (W******) box.
- I know - should be using Linux.
