Isn't xf86config an XFree86 3.x config tool? It sounds like maybe
you are forcing it to use the old XFree86 3.x when you run xf86config
and then your distribution "fixes" it so you run XFree86 4.x but the
old and incompatible XF86Config file is being used. You should run
"XFree86 -configure" which is the XFree86 4.x config file generator,
or use Red Hat's config tool (xconfigurator ?).
