Finally solved! Thanks to Hy0 post on this newsgroup I used his patch (found in previous article on this mailing list) against a 4.3.99.6 snapshot I had already downloaded (this patch is intended for 4.3.99.5 but worked flawlessly with my 4.3.99.6, don't know whoat about with current 4.3.99.7). Compiled and configured, now I have my shiny desktop & even some 3D (OpenGL screensavers work). Only problem I still have (but is not so important) is that this server seems to lack DGA support (this is what a warning says) and so can't use my TV-tuner card with it.
