I can't solve the problem, but I may have some useful info...

I just bought a laptop that comes with a GeForce FX Go5200 chip.  When I install the 
current driver provided on nVidia's web site, I see the same thing you're seeing.

An nVidia employee who patrols their forums said that their current driver doesn't 
support my chip, but that the next version will and that we should expect that driver 
Real Soon Now.

Now, nVidia's website does claim that their current driver supports your chip, so I 
don't suspect you have an unsupported chip.  Our symptoms are similar though.
