I had a very similar situation like yours. I couldn't start X with ati's
driver and with dri+glx+glcore modules. The problem was with the order
of the modules in the XF86Config file. After ~12 hours of probing a guy
(god bless him) from the debian-user list sent me his order and poof,
it worked. I have a card with 9200 chipset, which is a problematic
type, cause I can not use xfree's driver with it, because the
radeon_drv only supports the 8xxx, 9000, <no 9200>, 9500 and so on. So
my chipset is missing, and X fails to start when I try to run it with
the radeon_drv...
I attach my config file, and hope that it'll be usefull for you.

In the config file this means that only users in the 'video' group can
access the dri. If you want to allow all users to use it, comment out
(insert a '#' before) the "Mode 0660" line, and uncomment (remove the
'#') the "# Mode 0666" line.
