But did someone maybe change something in the database internals, breaking the whole affair? Maybe the thing has switched to RPC in the meantime without my noticing, and encodings not handled right?


It's still running over CORBA.

If no-one cat think of an immediate answer, don't worry, I'll start delving into it seriously, once I've suggested all that's changed since I was kicked off.

I don't know, the only thing I changed was in TextWriter, but that was intended to improve the UTF-8 situation not make it worse. I used pieces from your patch with a couple other changes. I only tested it through the XML-RPC API though, so maybe it is related to CORBA not sure.
