I can't give you much detail because I found Xindice after I was already
using eXist.  When I tried using Xindice, it violated the XML:DB spec in
enough ways that I gave up, didn't want to re-write that much code.
Since then at least one of the big issues has been patched, so it
actually might be comparable now, I just haven't kept up closely.  Some
day I'll grab a new version and try it out again.

Xindice has XUpdate, in at least semi-working condition, and eXist
doesn't.

I don't know how good either of their XPath support is, I couldn't get
XPath queries below the Collection level to work with eXist but I
suspect that was my problem, as it appears that others have got it
working.  The eXist mailing list on sf.net is helpful.
