I did the build, but xindice start gives me a
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Software
(which I hardly get to see since the windows closes in an instant) - what am I missing THIS time?

Take a look at the test suite. Work like this:
1) cvs checkout xml-xindice 2) build 3) xindice start 4) build test
