Have you checked your bios to make sure the parallel port is configured correctly ? If not, cwdaemon may not run.

Thank you for your patience, Ed. Yes, I checked that a couple of days ago, and as far as I can tell, it looks OK. From the BIOS notes I took: Par port adr: 378; Mode ECP; IRQ7; DMA channel DMA3.

There is nothing actually plugged into the parallel port because I haven't yet fabricated the transceiver cable. I didn't figure that would keep the daemon from producing a sidetone.
