Do you have anything in your aliases.tab file? If you do try putting an empty file in it's place and test again. Do this by stopping xmail, replace the aliases.tab file and remove the aliases*.hdx file from the tabindex directory, restart xmail and test.
How have you been managing xmail, ie adding users, etc? If it still doesn't work paste a copy of your server.tab file here so we can look it over.
