Turn smtp send authentication on in your client, it can't hurt and maybe your problem is that you're being denied because of relay restrictions. Remember for send authentication it's the same as pop authentication, full email address and password. Have you got any custom domain setup? Strange that you are getting mailbox unavailable, it's almost like xmail is trying to take it for local delivery but can't because there is no such user.
