I can't speak to the actual server you were rejected by, but my server typically rejects null sender messages (other than those destined to required role accounts, such as postmaster or abuse). The reason for this is simple. There are currently several virii/trojans/worms out there that send mail to forged users (addresses made up by randomly selecting parts of addresses from the user's address book). There are also a lot of mail servers who do not do sufficient validation prior to accepting emails, preferring to produce bounce messages later. These two add together to produce a significant amount of traffic from "null sender" (some of the traffic is from brain dead mail servers sending bounces to forged addresses (from virii/worms/etc, and some of it is the virii/worms/etc sending their own made-up messages that look like bounces). In the end, it's still the old rule - "your network, your rules". They run their mail server for their own benefit, and can do pretty much whatever they want to with it - just as you can with yours (and I do with mine).
