I've had one of both dongle types and they're both cheap, and easy to keep clean.
The one MS sidewinder pad I have (usb dongle typed), is terrible in my opinion. Both types of GGP's can be had for 10-20. They're also both in the standardish PSX style (two prongs off one main rectangle). They deviate in the DPAD, which is a full triangle, as opposed to four seperate buttons.
