Unfortunatelly DGA really slow down things a lot. I usually set up my X server so as I have a high-resolution display (1024x???) and a low-resolution display (640x480) so when I run xmame in a window, I just switch mode with Ctrl+Alt+- and get the same performance with bigger output. Hope it helps.
