I think AdvanceMAME gets around the licensing issues on sourceforge by only distributing patches (or overrides) instead of the full source.
Yep, that's how it does. However, one wonders if this is really a legitimate way to go around MAME's license, but IANAL.
BTW, Lawrence, have you thought about doing the same? Sure, xmame would be more troublesome to install (download the mame code, patch it, THEN compile xmame) but it would allow some more freedom in licensing.
