Unfortunately, xmame seems more broken under metacity than other
apps, in that it can't get focus at all when it's launched full screen or
switched from windowed to full screen mode -- keystrokes are simply
ignored. There's got to be some way to give it focus when it's clicked.
Thanks for the information. I'm sure it'll be helpful in pinning down the
cause of the problem.

Wait, you're saying that when you do the following:

1) Launch xmame in a window
2) Click on xmame to give it input focus, if it doesn't currently have it
3) Press the xmame hotkey to switch to fullscreen

...xmame *loses* the input focus which it previously had when you do (3)? That's completely separate from the terminal issue (which is at least in theory a "feature"), and is indicative of a real bug in metacity 2.14. The intention behind the "strict focus" change in 2.14 was to *prevent* input focus from unexpectedly jumping between applications--an application spontaneously losing focus when it switches from a window to fullscreen is just completely wrong no matter what. You should definitely take this up with the GNOME guys.

Incidentally, I don't have GNOME 2.14 myself--I just googled "gnome 2.14 window focus" and found a bunch of posts on assorted message boards complaining about this sort of problem, one of which led me to that Bugzilla page.
