Leo,
X.400 (this refers to the ITU-T X.4xx series of recommendations) is the
messaging
protocol (service) in the context of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) familiy
of
data communication protocols.
It is difficult to compare, but you would have to include MIME with SMTP in
order to
bring SMTP closer to X.400. It should be understood, hese are fundamentally
different
protocol families.
X.400 requires an OSI protocol stack (or at least some of the upper layers),
this could
be an RFC1006 based implementation (OSI upper layers over TCP/IP). Not to speak
about naming services and other issues, which are important in using 'email' /
messaging.
But yes it is possible, and there are Recommendations from ITU and Standards
from ISO,
that describe how X.400 could be used, to transfer EDI messages.
Of course these do not deal with XML.
I do not see a benefit in using X.400, because the goal of reliable transfer of
data can be
achieved by other (simpler) means.
Talking about the INTERNET: as described, the X.400 could be retrofit on top of
it, but there
seems no real reward for that effort.
On the other hand the OSI stuff is a lot more mature/advanced/powerful, than
many of the
equivalent solutions from the Internet protocol familiy, but also complicated
and expensive
(except for ISODE).
Hope this helps,
Bernhard Garmann

Hi!
What about X.400!? Did someone know about how to transfer files which
using of the X.400 protocol? Is there any special software needed or can
you use "normal" e-mail protocol (SMTP) for this?
