Hi Everybody,

I have been watching this discussion group for a while
and, in that time, I have learnt quite a bit by
cross-referencing people's statements with what I find
in books, and sometimes following up references to
tools and other resources.

However, now that I think I have a grasp of what is
going on, I am quite put off by the use of the word
"parse" by some individuals! Either I have
misunderstood from the beginning, or it is being
misapplied.

Ok, here is my view. Please shatter my delusions.

- I could pass an XML message through a parser such as
XP, which would be based on the SAX API as opposed to
the DOM API, and it would cross-reference my data
against a DTD or schema, and output the XML file to a
new filename, or else, if my message was not compliant
to the DTD, do nothing.

- I could then take my "parsed" message and pass it
through a translator such as XT, which would also use
the SAX API, and it would refer to an XSLT document to
re-engineer my XML file into an HTML file.

If what I have stated above is true, then how come
people talk about translating the document as
"parsing"?

And, if I am right to use XSLT to translate, am I
alone in thinking that XSLT is not a lot of use in
converting XML into the sort of positional files that
most companies use for interfacing? In other words,
XSLT is great for reformatting markup languages, but
does not help me get data into or out of these markup
languages.

And if I am wrong to use XSLT, what should I be doing?

Please help as my learning curve is no longer curvy!

Best regards to all,

Bill Langlois.
